Though located in a highly populated area of London, St Clement Danes School benefits from a variety of stimulating play areas.
The rooftop playground offers unrivalled views of the surrounding skyline and is divided into a number of different play spaces:
- A large canopied area which allows for play and learning in all weathers
- A scented, planted area, lush with fragrant greenery and tended by the children
- A covered seating area
- A quiet space for contemplative reading and play
Ground floor playground
The soft pour surface of the large ground floor playground offers a safe and secure environment for junior playtimes. The main feature of this playground is the poop deck, a delightful wooden structure which acts as a focal point, bringing children together in quiet play or reading. The planted areas provide a natural touch in an inner city environment.
Another highly popular feature of this space is the traversing wall. The purpose made climbing wall encourages coordination, strength, team building and imaginative opportunities to play. Playground markings encourage and act as a prompt for games and wall mounted displays encourage learning in a informal context.
Fenced play area
This area provides another dimension in play, allowing large scale team games and competitive sport in a safe environment. Classes are allocated specific days to play in this space and it is also used for PE lessons during the day.
The Sun Deck
A narrow corridor of outdoor space, decked and fitted with picnic benching provides another attractive area for both work and play. This well used spot also provides a place for children to park their bikes and scooters.
Early years playground
A large playground at the side of the school allows Reception and Nursery children to play safely. A covered area ensures that children can have access to the outdoors in all weathers and houses a large climbing structure. Sand and water facilities and the use of attractive planting make this a lovely place for young children to play.
