Readerful Online Author Visits
Oxford University's Readerful scheme is promoting reading for pleasure and St Clement Danes has enjoyed their virtual author storytimes and hearing the authors discuss their books:
- We had Ali Sparkes reading 'It’s Me, the Bee' to KS1 - a great link to their animal topics.
- Lower KS2 heard Isabel Thomas read 'Meet My Imagination'.
- Upper KS2 listened to last year’s Children’s Laureate Joseph Coehlo read 'The Day the World Turned Upside Down'.
We loved hearing from authors about their writing process and inspiration!

New Levelled Books
Thank you to the PTA for part-funding new levelled reading books for Year 2 and Year 3. Well done for raising £300 from the ‘Bake for Books’ bake sale! You may find some exciting Collins Big Cat books in your book bags soon! Thank you, everyone!
New Books Alert!
Each class was gifted a selection of books for their Class Book Corner, funded by the money we raised at the Scholastic Book Fair in March 2024. Thank you, parents, for spending £1028 at the book fair, which gave the school a brilliant £514 to spend on books!
This year we focused on boosting the early chapter books for Years 2 and 3 and enhancing the variety of chapter books in Years 4, 5 and 6.
Recent information from the Centre of Literacy has suggested that books available in Early Years often focus heavily on animal characters, so we have bought in a selection of books suited to Reception and Year 1, with a diverse range of human stories.
For all books chosen, we always ensure diverse characters and authors and ensure the books are age-appropriate for the key stage. Some of the books relate to the themes covered in the curriculum, but most importantly they have been chosen for the children to enjoy - to entertain, to explore emotions, to see themselves in the story or to take them on adventures!
Happy reading, St CD!!
