Reading Books
Posted on: 03/04/2020
It has been so great to see so many companies make their resources available to children for free while they are home learning. These companies have provided levelled reading books so you can ensure that your child is reading a book suited to their level.
'Collins Big Cat' Reading Books
This is a scheme that we use at school for practising phonics, group reading and for Key Stage 2 take-home books. Collins has made many of the books that we have at school available online. The titles are for Key Stage 1 and lower KS2, up to Lime level. They have also provided their Progress Books with texts aimed at the interest of upper KS2 children, but with a lower reading band. Please click the link below to browse the collection.
After reading each book there is a little questionnaire, which the children can answer to check their understanding of what they have read.
'Oxford Owl' Reading Books
This is another reading scheme, which is free online, that is used in many schools and libraries. We have some of these books in our system at school too. Click the link below to explore the Oxford Owl collection:
Guidance for choosing your books
Please click the link below to work out how the Big Cat colour banding system links to the numbered levels we use in Key Stage 1. We have done our best to combine this with the Oxford Reading Tree levels so that you can cross-reference. We have created a best-fit approach as many levels overlap.
Children develop as readers at different rates and an average age and year group has been matched to the levels to help too.
